Quiet Time

I've been watching episodes of Freaks and Geeks and reading Paul Feig's book Kick Me. That's like drinking booze and over-dosing on decongestants at the same time. Super bad for your health, even when done individually. So don't do it. We actually just finished watching the last episode of Freaks (we got the DVD set), and it's just depressing that that's it. It went a single season and got axed. I don't blame NBC though; some shows just don't find an audience. Plus, people would just rather watch super models eat horse testicles on a potentially lucrative dare than watch an earnest show about teenage awkwardness. Actually, after writing that last sentence, I do blame NBC. Fuck them.

Despite Freaks's unceremonious canning, the ending was ultimately satisfying. A complete story arc was achieved for the main characters over the course of the series. Not to mention, we got to spend around 18 hours with these characters; that's a lot more time than you get with most movie characters. Even hobbits. And now we get to make up what happened to the characters afterwards (or if we're millionaires that can afford the deluxe DVD set we can just read what happened next in the unfilmed scripts [Limited Edition Pre-emptive correction: this is not true.]). You couldn't do that with Friends after the finale - it was pretty obvious that once the last scene ended a bus was going to smack into them Final Destination-style as they crossed the street to Caf<French e> Perk for the last time.

Now I'm going to put on my headphones and listen to music with the volume up so high that it distorts to the point where you can't even discern the melody from the piercing blasts of white noise. It will sound like plate glass windows raining from the sky and exploding on the pavement as a jet engine the size of the sun ignites. Actually, maybe I'll listen to the music a little quieter than that. Or a lot quieter. In fact, I think I'll just hum softly to myself instead.
